Brush Your Teeth
Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes, cleaning your gums and tongue as well. You should talk to our dentist about the right type of toothbrush, such as an electric or soft-bristled brush, for your teeth.
Floss Each Day
Flossing can prevent build up and inflammation. This can keep your restoration and natural teeth healthy and prevent decay and other dental health issues.Visit Your Dentist

Hard/Sticky Foods
Hard or sticky foods such as caramel or ice can cause damage to your dental crown. In fact, they're not great for natural teeth, either! If you cannot avoid particular foods that are hard or sticky, try to chew on the side of your bite without a dental crown to prevent your restoration from being dislodged or damaged.
Grinding Teeth
Grinding your teeth can cause wear and damage to your crown and natural teeth. Our Kailua-Kona practice can 3D print custom night guards in our office to help you prevent damage to your dental crown and other teeth.
Tobacco Use
Tobacco is bad for your oral and overall health, and can stain your teeth and dental crown. If you need an implant-supported crown, tobacco can also affect your body's ability to heal, which can lead to implant failure. It is best to quit smoking to maintain your crown and dental health.

What other dental treatments use crowns?
A dental crown is a versatile dental treatment that restores the function, strength, and appearance of a tooth. Dental crowns are also used to support a dental bridge, replacing one or more consecutive missing teeth. Crowns are placed over the anchoring teeth to secure the artificial tooth or teeth that fill the gap. During your initial consultation at our Kailua-Kona office, Dr. Oka can determine if a single crown or a bridge is the best dental treatment for you.
If a tooth is damaged, why not just pull it?
Preserving the tooth is a priority at our Kailua-Kona practice. Your jaw relies on the stimulation that the tooth root provides, and when you lose a tooth, the jaw loses that stimulation and can deteriorate. This can lead to other oral health issues and the need for other dental treatments such as bone grafting. Extractions are only done when the tooth cannot be saved. In these cases, Dr. Oka may recommend an implant-supported dental crown.
My tooth is damaged but it doesn't bother me. Should I still get a crown?
A damaged tooth can create openings for bacteria to enter. This can cause infections, which may require a root canal later. By treating the damage before it can cause an infection, you can protect your oral health and prevent the need for other treatments. Remember: a damaged tooth is only going to become more compromised over time, so it pays to be proactive.
